If I had to pick a favourite Italian town, I think that Lucca wins: a labyrinth of a medieval town center, piazzas that are oval instead of square, tree-lined city walls that you can circle around on (for hours on end, guilty), a vibrant cultural scene, and steady flow of interesting characters from all over the world. This is the view from Porta di San Gervasio, but it’s no less charming from any of the other five historical gates.
